Water Exercises

Having been blessed with 7,107 islands, we are surrounded by water everywhere. And anytime is the best time to enjoy Nature’s gift of sun and surf. Here are some water sports to try out with family and friends.

In Water

Swimming – This is one activity that you can do until you are old and grey. It is gentle on the joints and works almost every muscle. It can be as mild or as intense as you want it to be. It all depends on how fast you swim and what stroke you choose.

Aqua Aerobics – If you don’t like getting your hair wet but like exercising in a cool buoyant environment, then aqua aerobics is a good choice. You can do “shallow” exercises in chest deep water or you can “run” while being supported by a flotation vest at the deep end of a pool.

On Water

Rowing – Not just an upper body exercise, as many people believe, rowing is actually more of a leg workout. In fact, it is a total body exercise involving all the major muscle groups.

Wind Surfing – The muscles used in rowing re, more or less, the same ones used in windsurfing. However, because you have to stand on the board, your sense of balance will also be enhanced.

Sea Kayaking – This is a “waist whittling” workout because of the rotary motion as you paddle through the water. Your arms, shoulders, back, and abdominal muscles will get a challenging workout.

White Water Rafting – There was a time when you could only do this exciting recreation abroad. Not anymore. There are now white water rafting destinations like Cagayan in the North and Cagayan de Oro and Davao in the South.

Underwater

Snorkeling – The next time you are at the beach, grab a mask, snorkel, and fins and get a peek at the underwater world without having to actually go under.

Scuba Diving – Due to advances in scuba technology, you can be relatively unfit and still enjoy this underwater recreational sport. It also doesn’t matter how overweight you are because, once in the water, you are weightless.

Water Hockey – This sport requires a strong set of lungs and a high fitness level to chase a hockey puck underwater.

Extreme Sports -Not all of us are cut out for extreme sports but if you have always wondered what it’s like to ride the waves, try taking a few lessons for beginners and who knows? You just might be a convert. Surfing, wake boarding, and kite boarding are three relatively new water sports that are drawing their share of fans.
