Top Killer Diseases in the Philippines

According to the Department of Health, the top leading diseases that caused death in the Philippines as of 2009 are as follows: Heart disease – refers to diseases involving the heart and blood vessels such as Coronary artery disease, Cardiomyopathy, Hypertensive heart disease , Heart failure, Cor pulmonale , Cardiac dysrhythmias , Inflammatory heart disease, Endocarditic, Myocarditis , Valvular heart disease, Cerebrovascular disease, Peripheral arterial disease, Congenital heart disease, and Rheumatic heart disease among others.

Diseases of the Vascular System – Vascular disease is a form of cardiovascular disease primarily affecting the blood such as Aneurysm, Renal Artery Disease, Buerger’s Disease and Peripheral Venous Disease among others.

Malignant Neoplasms – this essentially refers to cancer or malignant tumor

Pneumonia – is an inflammatory condition of the lungs

Accidents – this usually takes the form of motorcycle accidents

Tuberculosis – or TB for short is also called phthisis pulmonalis, is an infectious disease caused by various strains of mycobacteria that typically attacks the lungs

Chronic lower respiratory disease – or diseases that affect the lungs such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Emphysema and Chronic bronchitis

Diabetes Mellitus – known as simply diabetes, is a group of metabolic lifelong diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period that affects the body’s ability to use the energy found in food.

Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis – inflammation of the kidneys and may involve the glomeruli, tubules, or interstitial tissue surrounding the glomeruli and tubules.

Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period or conditions through the first 28 days after birth, even though death or morbidity occurs later. This is caused by maternal hypertensive disorders, renal and urinary tract diseases and infections among many others.
