Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens that impairs a person’s vision. It can be caused by aging, a result of infection, inborn, caused by diseases such as diabetes, or exposure to toxic substances or injury to the eye. Eye cataracts can be corrected through surgery in which the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). Following are ways to prevent acquisition of eye cataract.

Avoid vices. One of the best ways to prevent cataract is avoid vices or live a healthy lifestyle. This essentially means quitting or avoiding smoking as well as reducing the consumption of liquor or alcohol especially whisky, brandy, beer and gin. This is primarily because the toxic substances of cigarettes as well as liquor directly contribute to the development of cataracts.

Eat right. Eating right is important to prevent the acquisition of diseases such as diabetes. However, eating right also helps in reducing the risk of developing cataracts. Specifically, eating fruits and vegetables allows the body to get the right vitamin supplements and antioxidants to ward off cataract development. Vitamin A helps keep eye surface strong and healthy. Vitamin B is needed to keep bodily tissues including eye tissues and muscles strong. In line with this, tuna wheat bread, potatoes and mushrooms are recommended. Vitamin C protects the eyes from free radicals like pollution and damage. This vitamin is copious in many fruits. Finally, Vitamin E directly helps in preventing cataracts.

Protect eyes from the Sun. Ultraviolet or UV rays from the sun also contributes in the formation of cataracts. Hence, it would be advisable for people to wear shades or sunglasses especially when one is outdoors.

See eye doctor. Finally, regularly visit a doctor and undergo eye exams to check for signs of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other vision disorders. It is important that such diseases be detected early so that one can immediately adopt the necessary ways to prevent, halt or slow down the degeneration of the eye.
