Tilapia vs Bacon
While eating fish is generally considered healthier than eating pork especially processed meat, a new research has found that tilapia has inflammatory potential and therefore more dangerous than bacon.
In 2008, researchers at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine released a study that show that farm-raised Tilapia may cause more inflammation which in turn can lead to heart disease, arthritis, asthma and a world of other serious health problems because of the cancer causing organic pollutants that can be attributed to the feeds that are used on farm raised fish that included chicken feces.
Farm-bred fish such as tilapia have been found to have high concentrations of antibiotics and pesticides in order to prevent disease.
Contrary to the belief of reaping omega-3 fatty acid, the omega-3-acids in farm-raised tilapia are less usable. It also has lower protein content. Since, they are kept in cages; they often contain more omega-6 acids which can cause the inflammation to the body. Moreover, farm bred tilapia were found to have Dibutylin, a toxin that can impair immune system. It also has dioxin, another toxic substance that contributes in causing cancer.
The culprit is to this findings is farm breeding of tilapia especially in China where fish farms and food processors are situated in heavily industrialized regions where water is contaminated by pollutants. A tilapia that is organically raised however remains very healthful. It has a much omega-3 as tuna. It is very low in fat but high in protein.
