Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by abnormally high or low levels of sugar or glucose in the blood primarily due to absence or insufficient insulin produced by the pancreas to regulate blood glucose. The term diabetes mellitus was derived from an ancient Greek word diabainein which literarily means “siphon”. The term mellitus was added by Thomas Willis in 1675, to refer to the sweet urine of the patients as mel in latin means honey.
