The pain related to diabetes can sometimes take a toll with age. Older or elderly patients with diabetes can feel discomfort and weakness that can affect their quality of life. The pain related to diabetes is primarily caused by nerve damage called neuropathy, which can cause chronic pain in three ways. Pains or numbness in the toes, feet, legs, hands and arms is called Peripheral neuropathy. Pains in the thighs, hips and buttocks and legs are called proximal neuropathy. Sudden discomfort, weakness, pain or numbness in a single nerve that affects other nerve branches is called Focal neuropathy which can usually be experienced behind one eye, in the lower back, in the chest, or abdomen.
