People getting treatment for kidney stones may do well to think first before undergoing a common treatment to remove kidney stones. A new study done by Mayo Clinic researchers found that shock wave lithotripsy, which uses shock waves to break up kidney stones into smaller pieces, significantly increases the risk for diabetes and hypertension later in life. The study identifies the intensity of the treatment and quantity of the shock waves administered as the possible causes of increased diabetes risk, while the hypertension risk can be attributed to the treatment of stones in both kidneys. » Continue Reading
