Obesity Prevention by DOH

Over 10 million Filipino Adults are either overweight or obese. It is considered a silent killer because it a major cause of other deadly diseases yet is quietly plaguing the whole world. Obesity is the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may lead to health consequences such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and even cancer. Obesity is basically caused by increased intake of foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugars but are low in vitamins, minerals and essential nutrients as well as decreased physical activity due to the sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation and increasing urbanization.

DOH Lifestyle Diseases Program

Following the steady increase of Filipinos suffering and dying from “lifestyle diseases”, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, stress, sleep disorder and addiction among others, the Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines launched the lifestyle diseases programs to help combat these ailments. Dubbed as “Pilipinas Go4Health“, the program was designed to prevent and control the prevalence of lifestyle diseases which are highly preventable with regular exercise, proper diet, and avoidance from drinking and smoking.
