Leptin could Relieve Type 1 Diabetes

Scientists from UT Southwestern Medical Center found another drug to aid type 1 diabetics other than insulin. Using terminally ill rodents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, researchers found out that leptin, a hormone produced by the fat cells could lower glucose levels and maintain the glucose in normal levels for an extended period.

Epigastric Pain and Diabetes

Epigastric pain is a disorder located at the upper abdomen below the ribs that is usually experienced by people who ate or who lies down soon after eating. It is a typical symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn and is thus, associated with the gastric contents that travel upward into the back of the throat, resulting to burning sensation. However, epigastric pain can also be caused by the inflammation of the digestive organs, such as gastritis and pancreatitis, which in turn can be triggered by chronic hyperglycemia can lead to specific gastro intestinal (GI) complications. Diabetes is a disease that can affect many organ systems including the GI tract. In fact, diabetic patients suffering nephropathy also often suffer from gastro intestinal problems.

Diabetes and Postoperative Infection

Medical studies have confirmed that patients with diabetes mellitus are at an increased risk for infection compared with patients without diabetes. Those patients with complicated diabetes are even at greater risk of postoperative wound infection. This included patients who have undergone foot and ankle surgery, or major cardiovascular or abdominal surgery. The high rate of nosocomial infection or Hospital-acquired infection among diabetic patients especially those with poor glucose control confirm that hyperglycemia itself is an independent risk factor for the development of infection.
