Gallstones (biliary calculi) are small stones made from cholesterol, bile pigment and calcium salts, which form in the gallbladder, a small sac organ that holds the bile, a digestive juice produced by the liver for breaking down dietary fats. Gallstones do not usually require medical treatment except if starts to cause symptoms such as pain, jaundice and fever. Treatments may include changing diet, and surgery (e.g. cholecystectomy). Gallstones is a common disorder of the digestive system that usually affects people aged 50 years and over.
