There are a lot of things that a person with diabetes can do to help solve sleeping problems without resorting to taking even further medication.
- Exercise a few hours (ideally four to five) before bedtime to get your blood flowing evenly through your body.
- Avoid eating a lot of food for dinner or having a late snack. Also, do not smoke or drink caffeneinated beverages: nicotine and caffeine are stimulants that keep you awake.
- Find a sleeping rhythm and schedule and stick to it. However, do not force yourself to sleep; go to bed when you are sleepy.
- Scrap the naps, especially those in the afternoon, as these throw off your biological clock and make it harder for you to sleep at night. If you really cannot do away with taking naps, limit them to an hour or less.
- Relax yourself first. Take some time to just meditate or do some breathing exercises before you sleep. You will find that you will be able to sleep more easily when you are relaxed.
- Prop your feet up on pillows for better blood circulation. If your feet feel cold, wear socks. Remember that comfortable feet translate to comfortable sleep.
- Sleep apnea may be alleviated in three ways: weight loss, the use of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machinees, or through surgery. Consult your doctor for the most ideal recourse for you.
- Avoid stressors – create for yourself a positive environment and outlook and reserve some time for pampering yourself.
- Have yourself checked for underlying conditions that could be the actual cause of your sleeping problems. Diabetes is not always the outright reason for these sleeping troubles.
