PSEM Launches Diabetes Warrior Program

To address the growing need to spread knowledge about diabetes and its prevention, and to help thwart its increasing prevalence, the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (PSEM) launched another, more aggressive advocacy program called the Diabetes Warrior Program. In a press conference held at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila last July 12, 207; PSEM, led by its president Dr. Josephine Carlos-Raboca, in partnership with the Liga ng mga Barangay, represented by its president Marty Lim, presented to the press their advocacy program called “Hawak Kamay Laban so Diabetes”, which aims to promote diabetes awareness and prevention at the barangay level.

Specifically, the program aims to implement self-sustaining diabetes prevention program involving barangay health workers. With this program, volunteer barangay health workers would betrained in diabetes prevention and screening. “The 177 members of PSEM, the 42,000 barangays and 120 chapters would all come together and do this diabetes prevention program,” says a very optimistic Dr. Gabriel V. Jasul, chair of the PSEM Advocacy Program.

Professor Martin Silink, president of the International Diabetes Federation likewise graced the press conference and talked about the worldwide epidemic of diabetes and the passage of the United Nations Resolution designating November 14 as World Diabetes Day. PSEM officers and Mr. Lim of the Liga ng mga Barangay recognize the possible impact of the program, but at the same time are aware of the big challenge that the program poses for them. Meanwhile, Dr. Raboca encouraged everyone and all groups concerned in the care of diabetic patients to come together to curb the diabetes epidemic.”Diabetes Mellitus is already in epidemic proportions with an estimated 330 million in 2025.The top 10 countries with the most number of diabetics have already been reported, and unfortunately the Philippines is part of it,” she says.

The press conference capped off with the signing of the memorandum of agreement between officers of the PSEM and Mr. Lim of the Liga ng mga Barangay, to formally seal their partnership for the “Hawak Kamay Laban sa Diabetes” advocacy program.
