Poha Nutritional Benefits

Flattened rice or poha, is a simply rice which is beaten or pounded into flat light dry flakes. Because it is basically rice, poha is a primary source of carbohydrates, our major source of energy, which makes it an ideal breakfast meal.

Unlike food grains like wheat and barley, poha is low in gluten. It is also rich in vitamin B1, protein and antioxidants. It can be a complete meal by adding mixed vegetables sprouts, soya nuggets, peanuts and even boiled eggs. Poha is packed with iron which helps in preventing anemia. Iron comes in the body to form haemoglobin that carries oxygen to body cells.

Poha is advisable also for lactating women for their infant weaned from breastmilk. Other important nutritional content of Poha included potassium, dietary fiber Vitamin A, vitamin C, Calcium, and Vitamin E. It must be noted thought that Poha is a rich source of the aforementioned nutrients. In the Philippines, poha is eaten as rice flakes or rice delicacies (kakanin).
