Pancit and Diabetes

Pancit is a Filipino Noodle dish usually served during birthdays and special occasions to symbolize long life. Pancit was actually introduced by the Chinese and has since been adopted into local cuisine.

For diabetics, pancit bihon guisado is recommended to be consumed in moderation. The food has average carbs, which are easily broken down to become sugar. It has low fat content which makes it advisable for people who are losing weight. Pancit is good for diabetics if taken in moderation because it is a good source of Protein, Niacin, and Vitamin C. It is also low in Saturated Fat, which makes it an ideal source for energy.

However, the food is also high in sodium or salt which makes it bad if taken excessively. Too much salt intake can contribute to heart disease or high blood pressure, especially with diabetes that is why it is important for diabetics to cut back on sodium. The recommended salt intake for someone with diabetes or other heart risk factors is less than 1,500 mg a day.

A serving of pansit already provides 58 grams of sodium. That excludes the condiments added to the pansit. Too much sodium also tends to increase the person’s appetite or longing for water or food. Diabetics should cut down sodium in order to decrease their appetite as well as craving for water, food, sweets and other food. Cutting down on sodium is therefore important for diabetes management. As such, eating pansit should be in moderation.
