Pakwan good for Diabetics?
Pakwan or watermelons are not only safe but good for diabetics. It is recommended to be part of their healthy, balanced diet. This is primarily because they have few carbohydrates and sugar, are low in calories and full of nutrients. A 1 1/4-cup serving of watermelon approximately contains 15 grams of carbohydrates.
However, consumption of pakwan or watermelon should only be part of meal. This is because pakwan fruit has high glycemic index which is pegged at 72. This means that it has great effect on a person’s blood sugar because its carbohydrates break down quickly during digestion thereby releasing glucose rapidly into the bloodstream. Because of this, it is also recommended that this fruit be consumed along with foods that are low on the glycemic index such as protein rich food to minimize the effect of the food on blood sugar levels. Because of this, consumption of watermelons should at least be only two servings per day.
Watermelon or pakwan moreover can be a nutritious fruit choice for diabetics. This large fruit have no fat or cholesterol, and they are great sources of nutrients such as vitamin A, B6, C and potassium, which are good for diabetics. It also has the antioxidant carotenoid lycopene, which decreases the risk of prostate cancer for men and increases energy.
