Oysters and Diabetes

A balanced healthy diet is one of the important components to maintain healthful living especially for people with diabetes. Thus, health practitioners provide a list of food that diabetic patients should avoid as well as food choices that one can opt to have. For instance, a diabetic person should avoid refined sugar, meat and dairy products because they are high in fat.

However, it is also recommended for diabetic patients to eat food that are low in calorie but rich in vitamins and minerals that are needed by the body. Among such foods included chicken, and lima beans. When it comes to oysters, some nutritionists recommend that oysters is another seafood that diabetic patients can opt to include in their diet. Oysters are low-calorie see food that also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C and D as well as minerals like iron, copper, iodine, magnesium, and zinc, among others.

Lately however, the eating of oysters has raised concerns especially for diabetic patients especially raw oysters which can harbor a particular bacteria that is deadly to diabetic people. A virulent strain of bacteria called “vibrio vulnificus” can be found in oysters which makes it potentially dangerous to people especially with diabetes. Diabetic people are characterized to have a weak immune system, which makes it difficult for them to heal simple wounds and bacterial infections.

The vibrio vulnificus bacteria can potentially cause belligerent skin infection to a person, which can literally eat away the infected body part that could lead to amputation. Hence, it would be advisable for diabetic patients to avoid raw oysters to avoid acquiring a the vibrio vulnificus bacteria which can cause and infection that their body immune system cannot combat to the extent that it would rot their infection and cause amputation.
