Also known as Mung bean or green bean, monggo is common and popular vegetable in the Philippines, which can be eaten as beans or sprouts (also called toge). The monggo can be cooked as a viand or a dish menu or can be included to make a dessert.

Monggo is neither good nor bad for diabetes. It is not good for diabetes in the sense that the vegetable does not have a direct effect or contribution in healing or treating diabetes. Most people usually associate goodness to something if it helps in managing or treating a disease. In this sense, mongo is not good for diabetes in the same way as ampalaya can be good and helpful in managing diabetes.

However, monggo is also not bad for diabetes. Infact, it is a good food choice for diabetics because they are low in GI (Glycemic Index). This means that they have little to no effect in elevating blood sugar levels. While it is good for its low GI, it is nevertheless not recommended to be eaten excessively. Monggo is a kind of legume which is rich in protein that in turn can be harmful to the kidney and can increase risk of getting hypertension. In fact its protein content makes it the food for the brain. In other words, monggo is good for diabetics in so far that it has low GI. It should nevertheless be eaten in moderation for its other negative effects for excessive consumption.

As a great vegetable, munggo has many other nutritional benefits. It is rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, thiamine, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. It is a commonly recommended dietary supplement for people on weight loss programs. Its high fiber content helps in proper digestion, which incidentally contributes in making blood sugar more stable. This does not mean eating monggo will stabilizes sugar levels. Moreover, some experts claim that it has anti-cancer properties among other benefits.
