Men: The Stronger Sex?

Posted on February 14, 2023 | No Comments on Men: The Stronger Sex?

Men and women are created equal. But men and women are different, too. And diabetes has a gender bias—against both sexes. In some aspects, men get the shorter end of the stick; in other aspects, women do.

Sometimes, men with diabetes are dealt an unfair hand. In America, about 8% of men with diabetes suffer congestive heart failure compared to 1.4% of men with normal blood sugar levels. Men with diabetes also have a 3 to 6% higher frequency of chest pain, heart attacks and heart disease than those without diabetes.

In people diagnosed with diabetes before age 30, men develop retinopathy (eye damage) more quickly than women. Limb amputation rates related to diabetes are 1.4 to 2.7 times higher in men than women with diabetes. Obviously, with uncontrolled diabetes, neither side wins in the battle of the sexes.

One’s manhood, sexually speaking, is also challenged with diabetes. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common occurrence in men with diabetes, fifty percent of whom will suffer from ED within 10 years of diagnosis. But ED can be prevented by:
• Controlling one’s blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol
• Managing stress and worry
• Not smoking
• Not drinking alcohol excessively

Other male-specific concerns besides ED, such as low testosterone levels, “male menopause” or andropause, male infertility and prostate problems will also be addressed in this issue.

Please forgive the preoccupation with procreation, but men are entitled not just to the joys of sex but to its health benefits as well. After all, sex (in the non-scandalous context) can help relieve stress, boost immunity, burn calories, improve heart health, boost self-esteem, and even reduce prostate cancer risk.

May the men in our lives age gracefully by not forgetting how to play!
