Mabolo Fruit for Diabetics

More popularly known as velvet apple and Butter fruit and locally known as mabolo, the Diospyros blancoi fruit grows from a medium size tree normally called kamagong that reaches a high of 20 meteres and with leaves described as leathery, oblong shape and large. The fruit on the other hand is a round fleshy reddish brown covered with velvety fur with a taste similar to fruit cream cheese. It is quite noticeable however that the scent of fruit is not pleasant.

The Mabolo fruit is a nutritious fruit and has elements used as medical ingredient for diseases such as asthma, diarrhea and diabetes. For anti asthma, it has methanolic extract which as anti-inflammatory properties against allergen-induced eosinophilic inflammation. As anti diarrhea, it contains ethanolic extracts in its leaves whose effect is comparable to the drug loperamide. Mabolo however has not been proven to have anti diabetic ingredients. Finally, as anti-diabetes, the fruit contains volatile components of benzyl, butyl and (E)-cinnamyl butyrate, which help improve Insulin Sensitivity and increases energy. Because of the above, mabolo is believed to be good for people with diabetes.

Generally, mabolo is a nutritious fruit which is rich in vitamins and minerals such as Fiber, Calcium, Protein, Phosphorous, Iron, Vitamin A, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin and Vitamin C. Aside from the nutritional benefits of the fruit, the bark of the tree is also popularly used for itchy skin ailments as well as decoction for coughs. Its leaves are also Antioxidant for its tannins and alkaloids contents. Lately, the fruit is under intensive study as an inexpensive source of Biofuel.
