Lixisenatide, which stimulates insulin release when glucose levels become too high, and slows down stomach emptying will be sold under the brand name Lyxumia soon.

Drug company Sanofi recently announced the findings of their study involving the drug combined with Lantus insulin which showed a significant improvement in blood sugar levels and body weight among type 2 diabetes patients.

Pierre Chancel, senior vice president of Sanofi Diabetes, said that the positive results revealed that the combination of the two drugs can be an innovative therapeutic option for the treatment of uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.

Meanwhile, European authorities accepted Sanofi’s marketing application for Lyxumia late last year as the company filed a request for regulatory approval in the United States for the fourth quarter of 2012.
