Laughter Deters Heart Risk for Diabetics

Indeed, laughter is proven to be the best medicine. A California study authored by Lee Berk, DrPH, MPH, of Loma Linda University and Stanley Tan, MD, PhD, of Oak Crest Health Research Institute showed laughter may have serious heart benefits for people with diabetes.

Twenty high-risk type 2 diabetes patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) and high cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia) were divided into a laughter and comparison group, and received routine medical care in this year-long study.

The laughter group was requested to choose a funny video to watch for at least 30 minutes a day. Every two months the subjects were subjected to blood tests. The patients in the laughter group recorded better HDL (good) cholesterol levels than the patients in the comparison group. Moreover, the laughter group also had lower blood levels of certain inflammatory chemicals.

The authors posit the blood profiles could mean a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The results were presented in New Orleans at the American Physiological 15 Society’s annual meeting, which is; part of Experimental Biology.
