Lanzones and Diabetes
Lanzones of which the Philippines is blessed with one of the sweetest species is considered a healthy fruit snack for diabetics. This fruit contains a variety of nutrients that can benefit your health. It contains protein, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, ascorbic acid and phytin. Lanzones is also rich in riboflavin and thiamine, vitamin B-2 and B-1 for body growth and red blood cell production. Thiamine is used for breaking down sugars and for treating several nerve conditions. The vitamin A contents of Lanzones called retinol or carotenoids is important for healthy skin, teeth, soft and skeletal tissue and mucous membranes. It is also a powerful antioxidant.
What makes lanzones especially healthful for diabetics is its fiber. Fiber basically helps keep the stomach full thereby reducing appetite and helping diabetics reduce food intake. However, lanzones has no direct effect on treating or curing diabetes.
Apart from its nutritional values, Lanzones have many medicinal uses. It helps treat diarrhea. It helps cool the body because of its moisture content which is perfect for summer. Meanwhile its dried peels can be burned to drive away mosquitoes.
