Go for the Optimal A1c Level! Or simply, Go for the G.O.A.L.! The catchphrase for the recent launch of the newest aid in winning against diabetes says it all about Pioplus, a combination of two potent antidiabetes drugs: pioglitazone and metformin.

The performance of Pioplus, manufactured by LRI (a division of United Laboratories, Inc.), resembles that of the action-packed sport of football, said Pioplus Brand Manager Bopbop Monteros during the unique football-inspired launch held at the Makati Shangri-La.

A football team may be composed of numerous members, but each has his own responsibilities to create an effective action and reach for the goal. This is much like the combined workings of pioglitazone and metformin, both of which aim for the goal of attaining the right hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, explained Monteros.

Practical and effective
According to Dr. Nemencio Nicodemus, endocrinologist and Associate Professor and Vice Chairman for Academic Affairs at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of the Philippines-Manila, the current trend in managing diabetes is to be more aggressive at an earlier stage and to combine treatments with monotherapy if the optimal HbAl c levels cannot be attained.

Technically, metformin is used to reduce glycemic levels by 20 to 25 percent, and maintain this for two years. Beta cell function begins to fail, however and in this case, Dr. Nicodemus said pioglitazone is the logical combination for metformin.

According to studies, oral administration of pioglitazone in combination with metformin was generally well-tolerated in long-term clinical trials, as compared with taking metformin alone, whose side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Pioglitazone-metformin combination is also seen to have sustained efficacy in lowering fasting blood sugar (FBS) and HbA1c compared to gliclazide-metformin combination.

Not only does this combination improve glycemic control; It also improves insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles, which remain the cardinal points of diabetes care.

Also, diabetes patients are often treated with multiple medications which, according to most studies, make it difficult for them to comply, mostly for economic reasons. With this, a more practical and convenient treatment regimen such as the pioglitazone-metformin treatment is advised.

Rising above the controversies
By itself, the Pioplus launch was totally in sync with the product’s GO for the GOAL catchphrase as it was the successful culmination of events, challenges, and controversies surrounding the product’s release. So now, LRI has finally acquired the go signal to launch Pioplus as the diabetic Filipino’s new partner in reaching for the goal of attaining the perfect HbA1c level.
