Holiday Partying Tips

A holiday party is never complete without an array of carbohydrate-rich foods that are sure to raise your sugar level!  Picture a traditional Noche Buena feast: Christmas ham or the Filipino favorite lechon as the dinner centerpiece, pasta, morcon plus a myriad of other appetizers, side dishes and desserts.

To help you get through those endless Christmas parties, here are a few tips:

  • Resist the habit of sampling each food item on the buffet table.  Pick only those that you really want to try.
  • Choose what you put on your plate well.  Resist the temptation to get that breaded pork or that chicken dish covered in thick sauce for it contains extra carbs and calories.
  • Be watchful of how many of those wonderful little appetizers you have eaten.  Appetizers are served small alright, but munching on too many will definitely contribute to that hyperglycemia attack.
  • If the party is going to be at night, plan your meals accordingly during the day.  Eating healthy at home and filling yourself with healthy and nutritious food can help minimize your cravings for sinfully delicious foods at the part.
  • If you really want to drink, ask your physician about it.  Keep in mind that alcohol contains calories and it may also interfere with medications.
  • Bring food to a party – a healthy dish or dessert which you prepared and therefore know its carbohydrate content.
  • For those on insulin, talk to your doctor and plan ahead on what to do in situations where your carbohydrate intake may increase.
  • Finally, don’t overindulge.!
