Herbal Cure for Hypertension

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a medical condition in which blood pressure in the arteries is raised to more than the standard which increases the risk for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, vision loss, and metabolic syndrome. This is common in modern society because of the prevalence of fatty foods and other conveniences in life that make people less active or promotes sedentary lifestyle. To prevent or to treat high blood pressure, one can opt to engage in lifestyle changes and use natural herbal treatments for lowering blood pressure. Following are some herbal cure of hypertension.

Garlic – a common ingredient in food helps lower blood pressure by lowering systolic blood pressure as much as 10%. The sulphur contents of garlic including allicin, act on the body’s nitric oxide system which relaxes the arteries and lowers systolic blood pressure.

Basil is another common herb used in variety of foods especially in pastas, soups and salads. The contents of basil also help in lowering blood pressure although momentarily only.

Black Chocolate / Cocoa Extract – dark chocolate particularly the cocoa helps slightly lower blood pressure in people. The cocoa affect the nitric oxide system resulting in vasodilation and lower blood pressure. It also may inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme. However, it must be noted that eating large amounts of chocolate is not advisable because it also contains caffeine and sugar which in turn can increase blood pressure.

Sambong – is a natural herb in the Philippines known for strongly aromatic scent, whose leaves can be used to treat mild hypertension.

Sili or Cayenne Pepper – is another common herb that helps regulates blood pressure. It is rich in sulphur which helps in manufacturing hydrogen sulphide in the blood vessel linings which helps regulate blood pressure.
