Healthy Snacks for Diabetes

Diet is central in the management of diabetes. Hence, it is important for diabetic patients to know what to eat and in what amounts in order to regulate and manage the disease, which if not properly monitored can lead to very serious problems and consequence. This means that when the stomach of a diabetic patient starts to rumble, one can simply munch on anything to address the hunger. Instead, one need to take a snack that can satisfy your stomach without blustering your blood sugar levels. So what exactly can a diabetic eat when his tummy goes mad.

Peanuts – Eating peanuts is one of the quick snacks that diabetic patients can have. A handful of almonds or walnuts, cashews or pistachios will do the trick. A handful would be enough to satisfy the belly and to get the needed protein.

Apple – An apple a day keeps the hunger away for a diabetic without fear of surging your blood sugar. It would also be advisable to include the skin of the apple.

Banana – Banana is a healthy snack that is heavy on the belly but light in calories. It is also rich in potassium which is just a bonus mineral that one can get to tame the raging belly.

Grapes – Grapes is another healthy fruit that is safe snack for a diabetic. One can eat up to 25 grapes without fear of sugar increase or calorie problem. Another great thing about grapes is that you eat them one by one thus giving you the impression that you’ve been eating longer.

Fruit Smoothie – For a refreshing drink with a unique taste, simply blend different fruits and add a non-nutritive sweetener for a snack. You can also add some non fat milk.

Raw Vegetables – If you’re hungry, then snack on raw veggies such as carrots, turnips, cucumbers or cauliflower. A very light salad dressing won’t hurt.

Dark chocolate – if you can’t help eating chocolate for a snack, chose dark chocolate and do not eat the whole bar.
