Healthy Meals for Diabetics

Eating healthy meals is at the core of diabetes management because it is basically the food that a person eats which spikes up blood sugar levels. Healthy meals therefore are important to reduce risk for diabetic complications. There is no specific food that is perfect for a diabetic patient. What is important is that food that is selected for meals have balance diet. Having diabetes is not a weakness. Instead, it is an opportunity for people to live a healthy lifestyle which among others starts with making healthy food choices.

Planning a healthy meal for diabetes can be fun. One can simply use creativity in combining foods which are generally considered healthy such as vegetables, fruits, non-fat dairy products, beans, lean meats, poultry and fish. In lieu of which, the most basic healthy meal for a diabetic is eating raw fruits. For instance, one can eat raw banana, raw apple, and raw orange or raw strawberries. If one can eat raw carrots and other raw vegetables then it is also great.

However, a common approach to eating vegetables is eating salads. Salads can be made of mix raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, radishes, celery, and spinach. One can create varieties of salads by adding varying toppings such as grilled chicken, shrimp, or fish or adding vinegar. Incidentally, one should avoid heaping fattening foods such as bacon bits, cheeses or mayonnaise and other dressings.

Another option is to roast the vegetables such as in the case of roasted cauliflowers, onions and sweet potatoes. Another healthy food meal for diabetes is sandwiches. Instead of eating rice, one can opt to make sandwiches using whole-grain bread or a whole-wheat tortilla and adding lean meat, such as turkey, ham, or grilled chicken.

Finally, another healthy meal for diabetics is soup can such as Chicken noodle which can be added with vegetables. Using salads, soups and sandwiches, one can have an unending list of healthy food combination that can last you a lifetime. One just needs to be creative. Just remember that diabetes is not a handicap but an opportunity to be creative and live healthy.
