Also known as Aplotaxis lappa, Kushtha, Mokko, spiral ginger or Tabubungiau in the Philippines, the Costus is A tall perennial plant or herb whose root from which oil is extracted is used to make medicine. The Costus root is approximately the size of a finger with a yellowish woody part, which was historically used to make perfume as well as a culinary spice.

The Costus root in traditional Chinese medicine is used invigorate the life energy and enhancing the digestive function. It is used to improve appetite, and treat abdominal pain or swelling, nausea, and vomiting. It helps treat digestive problems such as Gas as well as asthma, Cough, dysentery, and Cholera. Because it helps people to be energetic or it stimulates people, it is taken by people who are engaged in exercise and intense work outs.

The roots of Costus can also help in treating sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea, eye ailments, and the common cold. It also serves as an effective laxative for increasing bowel movement. Costus is also used to treat skin diseases, rheumatism, bronchial asthma, dyspepsia, gas, and edema. Finally, the root of the herb is also used to treat worm infection.
