Label Lesson #5: Make a ‘deal-breakers‘ list

Understandably, there are going to be times when we’ll choose to eat unhealthy foods—after all, who doesn’t understand the pangs of a killer craving? But rather than trying to quit bad foods cold-turkey, start slowly. Try making a list of “dealbreakers”—foods you will immediately begin to stop eating. This could vary widely from person to person, depending on their medical history and health goals. If you have migraines, for example, then canned meats should be on your “deal-breakers” list, because of the sodium nitrite used as a preservative, which has been shown by studies at the US FDA to trigger migraines. If you have diabetes, on the other hand, then soda should top your list.

The thought of reading label after label may seem daunting at first, but with some time and practice, reading food labels will be second nature. Over time, as your body begins to receive more nutrition, your cravings for bad food will actually begin to diminish. Who knew a little eye exercise could benefit your entire body”
