In dieting, more is really less. This simply means eating more of certain kinds of foods, which can help burn fat faster. Sound too good to be true? Read on to find out.

Want to burn fat? Here’s a different advice – try eating more. While this statement may seem fallacious (and wonderful, for food-lovers worldwide), science has found that there are actually certain types of food that can help get rid of fat faster. And the best news is: most of these can be found inside our refrigerator.

However, it should be clear that these foods won’t burn calories by themselves; they only AID in our metabolism, which is the body’s natural fat-burning process.

“Not one food can actually burn fat. ‘Fat-burning‘ means that so-called foods will help the body get rid of fat. Indirectly, that is,” says Cristina Marasigan, a nutritionist at Gold’s Gym. According to her, the body can flush out the fat from food intake once the stomach is freed from the process of digestion for some time. Thus, eating food that is easy to digest will help the body to detox.

In general, fat-burning foods are any one or a combination of these:

  • Easy to digest
  • Provides energy to the body
  • Have to be natural (processed foods take more time to digest)
  • Raw

Citrus fruits, for one, help the body burn that bulge faster through its’ high amounts of Vitamin C. Apart from helping us stave off the common cold, Vitamin C also stimulates the amino acid carnitine, which greatly speeds up our metabolic process.

Apart from stocking up on oranges and tomatoes, here are other foods that, in one way or another, help “burn” fat:

  • Dairy Products -The calcium in milk, cheese and yogurt can speed up the breakdown of fat in fat cells. A daily glass of milk can help trim that belly fat and proves to be more effective than even calcium supplements.
  • Apples – This red fruit contains high amount of pectin, a compound that is used by chefs to make jellies. Pectin is high in fiber, which helps move waste along the intestinal tract. Incidentally, pectin also hardens the stool, for those suffering from diarrhea, making apples the ideal digestive aid.
  • Nuts – Nuts are low-carb foods that people should start integrating into their diet. It is packed with protein, which hastens the burning of fat. The amino acid arginine also helps reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction.
  • Whole grain cereals -This food group is an excellent source of fiber. The complex carbohydrates contained in cereals also prevent your insulin levels from spiking, so you don’t store fat as much. It can also boost your metabolism 10%.
  • Fish oil – Fish oil supplements contain Omega-3, which is good for the heart. Fish oil can also burn as much as 2 kg for 3 months.
  • Chili – Chilies, like cayenne pepper, contain capsaicin that increases metabolism. Capsaicin is a thermogenic food—which means it generates heat—and thus, it causes the body to burn calories a few minutes upon eating.
  • Green Tea – A cup of green tea a day will up one’s metabolism to as much as 8 to 14%. It also lowers cholesterol and helps keep our teeth healthy, making it an everyday must.
  • Beef – Yes, you read that correctly, eat more beef to lose weight! But we’re not talking about any normal meat here, but lean ones. Lean meat burns a lot of energy for it to be digested. Not only that but the protein from beef will build muscles, and the more muscles you have, the more calories you burn.
  • Chicken -A favorite among many, chicken is high in protein which helps burn calories faster.
  • Tuna – Tuna lowers the leptin in your body, and that makes fat burn faster and more efficiently. It is also a muscle builder so apart from getting leaner, you are also bulking up.

One vital thing to note is that these foods will only work their “fat-burning magic” if supplemented by a work out and not taken in excess. You can’t just gorge these down like a human food compactor and expect to see results right away. Exercise is still the best solution to shedding those extra pounds.

“Any form of exercise will complement this diet for as long as the person spaces out his food intake, ensuring that he has enough calories or energy to carry out the physical activity,” says Cristina.

“Cardio exercises will burn the excess calories and the stored fat. Strength training will build the muscles, which will improve the lean mass, and eventually will in turn make one’s metabolism more efficient,” she says. “Calories are burned even while the person is at rest.”

Another thing to keep in mind is that these fat burning foods may not provide all the vitamins and minerals that the body needs. In this case, there are some good, complex carbohydrates that were omitted in the diet, such as root crops. Camote, in particular, has soluble fiber and a lower glycemic index that makes it highly-recommended by doctors.

As such, it is important not to neglect the other food groups, even if this may set you back a few days in your diet. While it is nice to have a beautiful and lean body, health IS still our most valuable treasure. “For as long as what the dieter puts on his plate is based on the principles of Moderation, Variety and Balance, then (fat-burning) diet might actually be healthy!”
