DOH Lifestyle Diseases Program

Following the steady increase of Filipinos suffering and dying from “lifestyle diseases”, such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, stress, sleep disorder and addiction among others, the Department of Health (DOH) of the Philippines launched the lifestyle diseases programs to help combat these ailments. Dubbed as “Pilipinas Go4Health“, the program was designed to prevent and control the prevalence of lifestyle diseases which are highly preventable with regular exercise, proper diet, and avoidance from drinking and smoking.

The Pilipinas Go4Health is the nationwide healthy lifestyle movement that conducts information campaign and encourage Filipinos to a healthy lifestyle by making a personal commitment to physical activity, proper nutrition, and avoidance from smoking and alcohol consumption. It forms part of the commitment of the department to attain the right of Filipinos to a healthy family, community, and country.

The healthy lifestyle essentially involves an individual commitment to a certain set of activities that people should regularly perform in throughout their lives. This included eating variety of healthy foods daily, breastfeeding infants exclusively from birth to six months, providing children’s proper diet and regularly monitoring their growth, consuming fish, lean meat, poultry, or dried beans, eating more vegetables, fruits, and root crops, eating cooked food, consume milk and milk products, using iodized salt and avoiding excessive salty foods, eat clean and safe foods, exercising regularly, stopping cigarette/ tobacco smoking and avoiding drinking alcoholic beverages.
