Itchy Shins pertains to the uncomfortable prickly feeling that a person experience at the shin, or the area below the knee. The itchiness is a kind of skin irritation characterized by flaky skin, redness and rashes in the area. There are different Causes of Itchy Shins from simple causes like insect bites, old age, hygiene or sun exposure to complex and threatening diseases such as dehydration, dermatitis and most of all diabetes.

Diabetic itchy shins are an ailment caused primarily by the insufficient production of insulin by the body. Type II Diabetes experience the itchiness primarily because of insulin resistance. The Itchy shins caused by diabetes comes with other typical symptoms such as irritability, nausea, fatigue, blurry vision, increased hunger, thirst and urination, numbness of extremities, and weight decrease among others.

Diabetic Itchy Shins also usually comes with diabetic dermopathy or shin spots, which are round lesions in the shins, which is primarily caused by the inability of blood to supply sufficient nutrients to the skin. The poor circulation of blood mainly causes the itchiness as yeast and fungal infection and dry skin starts to hit the shin.

For diabetics, scratching the itch is not necessarily the correct option. Scratching only provides pleasure in yielding to the itch and it will not provide relief like the typical itchiness that regular people feels. Moreover, scratching makes one vulnerable to wounds, which is especially risky considering that some diabetics have difficulty healing wounds as the wounds remain fresh because of the inability of the blood to clot.

The fungal or yeast infection that causes the dry and itchiness of the skin can be relived by using anti fungal ointments. It is important to consult doctor and get the proper prescription or medicine for this. Itchiness due to fungal infections entails addressing the fungus and cannot be treated by self help options.
