Diabetes Specialists Unite for Diabetes

Following the passage of the United Nations Resolution 61/225, which formally designates November 14 as World Diabetes Day, the Philippine Diabetes Association, the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation, Inc., and the Diabetes Center, Philippines thought it fit to hold the Unite For Diabetes Convention to address the growing concern for this disease in the Philippines.

The convention, which was held at the Crowne Plaza Galleria Manila last July 12 to I 3, had Professor Martin Silink, MD, president of the International Diabetes Federation, and founder and leading advocate of the global advocacy of Unite for Diabetes, as guest speaker. Prof. Silink discussed the UN resolution saying that, “This resolution recognizes the burden of diabetes and the risk of diabetes in the entire world. This will mark the turning point in the fight against diabetes.” Professor Silink added, “It is the first time that the United Nations has recognized a non-communicable disease. This resolution joins the UN Resolution on AIDS as the only other disease-specific United Nations resolution.”

Other notable speakers included Drs. Ricardo E. Fernando, Ruby Go, Rosa Allyn-Sy, Josephine Raboca, Ma. Teresa Plata-Que and Augusto D. Litonjua. The most important issues regarding diabetes were tackled by these renowned doctors, and were all geared towards finding the right measures in finally taking control over the dreaded disease.

Topics centered on children and diabetes, new technologies in insulin delivery, diagnosis of the disease, and other related disorders such as hypertension and dyslipidemia. Also featured were awareness and educational programs being undertaken by various diabetes organizations in remote provinces in the country. Not only did the convention provide everyone with a better understanding of the disease, it also united everyone in the need to take the right measures for the prevention of this lifestylechanging and life-threatening disease.
