The mission of the Philippine Center for Diabetes Education Foundation, Inc. (PCDEF) is to improve the quality of life of Filipinos, most especially our patients with diabetes, by providing an excellent diabetes education program in the country. The Center is thus committed to give the best education on diabetes to everyone.

We have several activities to fulfill this commitment, one of which is the updating, and continuous development of materials on diabetes care and management for healthcare experts, patients and the public. With that, we decided to come up with the Diabetes Center Flipchart. The main goal or purpose of the Flipchart is to provide all our satellite clinics with an updated, and uniform educational tool to be used by the diabetes educators in their patient education program. It is designed so that the diabetes educators can effectively deliver diabetes education to their patients.

The Flipchart is very informative and practical to use as an educational tool. Diabetes educators may use it in the clinic during one-on-one or group teachings. The layout stimulates interactive discussions between the educator and the audience. It is very handy, easy to use and can be brought outside the clinic for teaching purposes.

The GETTING TO KNOW DIABETES Flipchart is the first of the series of the Diabetes Center Flipchart. Subject matters tackled in the Flipchart are:
• Diabetes statistics – worldwide and local prevalence
• Diabetes definition and pathophysiology
• Role of insulin
• Food and diet
• Antidiabetic medications
• Different types of diabetes
• Symptoms and risk factors
• Complications and prevention
• Lifestyle modification and many more

The Diabetes Center Flipchart was formally launched during the Diabetes Awareness Week Opening Ceremonies at the Glorietta Activity Center. The Center will distribute these Flipcharts to The Diabetes Center’s satellite clinics all over the country. We will also give copies to government health units and other medical entities. In fact, we have started the distribution of these Flipcharts after its formal launching.

Several of our satellite clinics from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have already received the flipcharts. The Center has given some to the provincial health units in Bulacan, Dagupan, Pangasinan, and to the government hospitals in Baguio and Benguet. The Diabetes Center Flipchart is the brainchild of Dr. Augusto D. Litonjua. The Diabetes Center wanted to provide educational tools in addition to the Diabetes Teaching Modules on CD and slides we usually give our satellite clinics and diabetes educators. The Diabetes Center hopes that this diabetes educational tool will not only further learning but improve the treatment and outcomes of diabetes in individuals, families, communities and other healthcare systems.
