Diabetes Club Philippines

Posted on September 12, 2020 | 1 Comment on Diabetes Club Philippines

Diabetes is most debilitating disease and most prevalent silent killer in the 21st century. More than 200 million people suffer from diabetes. In the Philippines, diabetes mellitus is fast becoming the leading cause of death among adults and is gradually seeping its way to younger people.

Under these premises, the premier health institution Makati Medical Center (Makati Med) established the first Diabetes Care Center in Asia in 1984 that provides medical care and management of the disease. Ten decades later, the problem of diabetes continued to surge seven-fold and affected more people. In 2011, MakatiMed launched the first ever Diabetes Club in the Philippines.

The Diabetes Club Philippines is essentially a group of people suffering from diabetes which is primarily designed for helping people with diabetes as well as their families develop a correct diabetes management program. This is because unlike other diseases, diabetes involves a comprehensive approach in lifestyle change which included medical nutrition therapy, glucose monitoring, exercise, and psychosocial adjustment. Thus, it is important to set up a group or club in which people with diabetes gain precious support from other people suffering the same disease who equally knows the unique challenges and emotions one experiences.

Because everyone else shares the same experience, members of the Diabetes Club Philippines feel more comfortable and are more open to sharing concerns, experiences and frustrations with each other.
Aside from group therapy counselling, the Diabetes Club Philippines also has diabetes specialist that included doctors, educator, nutritionist, nurses, foot specialist, exercise coach, among others who get together to share information and practical ways on managing diabetes. A regular symposium is also held to inform all members about updates on diabetes. Members are also given certain privileges such as discounts on insulin, diabetes laboratory package, food supplements and other diabetes related products and services. Finally, as a club, members are also engaged in different fun social activities and games which help foster camaraderie among members.

To become a member of the club, one can sign up for any of the Diabetes Education program in the MMC Diabetes Care Center at the 1st floor of Tower 2 from Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
