The dark pigmentation that appears on the legs especially on the shin or the lower legs just below the knees is principal symptom of Stasis dermatitis which in turn may be caused by venous stasis. Venous stasis is primarily caused by poor blood circulation on the leg part which may result to the accumulation of melanin in confined areas that result to the pigmentation. Aside from the darkening of the skin or brown discoloration, this disease is often accompanied with inflammation, scaling, and swelling. In some instance, the leg hairs are also loss is also due to problematic circulation. If not addressed, this disease can lead to leg contusion or stasis ulcers, varicose veins, and chronic leg pain.

Venous Stasis is usually suffered by people who are often engage in minimal to sedentary movements such as obese people and even professionals who just sit at a desk all day facing computers as well as those engage in driving long distances regularly. In cases like no movement of the legs results to the venous stasis, In lieu of which, the most apparent treatment to the venous stasis is by walking or engaging in exercise. It would also be advisable that the person suffering this disease elevates one’s legs when taking a rest to help the circulation of the blood towards the heart. Patients are also advice to lose weight which adds stress to the legs which carries the whole body. Finally, quitting smoking or avoiding alcohol can also help in the healing process.

While the brown skin pigmentation of the shins can also be attributable to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation or tanning processes, this disease is generally treated as harmless and manageable. However, it would still be advisable to have it checked appropriately by a skin expert doctor such as a dermatologist because it may also be a symptom of melanoma or skin cancer.
