Cod Fish Protein May Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
A diet that includes lean fish — a major source of cod protein — may help prevent type 2 diabetes. A recent study showed that dietary cod protein improved insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant individuals.
Researchers studied 19 insulin-resistant subjects who were fed a cod protein diet and a similar diet comprising of lean beef, pork, veal, eggs, nnilk and milk products (BPVEM) for four weeks. These diets provided equal amounts of dietary fiber, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids. After four weeks, those who were fed the cod protein diet had improved insulin sensitivity compared to those who were fed the BPVEM diet.
“Dietary cod protein improves insulin sensitivity in insulin-resistant individuals and thus could contribute to prevention of type 2 diabetes by reducing the metabolic complications related to insulin resistance,” according to study authors. “The mechanism underlying the beneficial effect of cod protein on insulin sensitivity could be attributed to its specific amino acid composition.”
