City Living Impairs Memory

The brain health of city dwellers must be paying the price of convenience of the urban landscape. With so many distractions – neon signs, numerous cellphone conversations, and other sights and sounds not available to rural areas, city dwellers begin to practice “controlled perception”.

In a study from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, it showed that merely living in an urban environment makes memory retention hard. In the same study, participants who are living in suburban areas showed more positive results in the brain health.

The good news is, city dweller need not move out of the comforts of their urban setting, they can “unplug” their thoughts by relaxing in a park or simply having a glimpse of a green surrounding. The key to this is to take time to reduce the cognitive efforts and relieve mental exhaustion as much as possible and you won’t have to worry about your shrinking attention span.
