Ballroom Dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and competitively around the world. There are different types of ballroom dances such as tango, bolero, cha-cha, foxtrot, hip hop, hustle, jive, meringue, paso doble, rumba, salsa, samba, swing and waltz among others. Each type of dance involves a complex and specific movement and rhythmic pattern of the feet and body that is accompanied by music.

Because of the movement of the body demanded by dancing, this sport or activity is great way for people of all ages to get and stay in shape. It is a valid form of exercise because it virtually involves moving one’s your body’s muscles from feet to arms, shoulders and neck to dance. Thus dance is a full body workout that helps burn calories and cardiovascular conditioning by lowering heart rate, blood pressure and cholesterol. It can also help fortify bones and enhance posture.

Among the benefits that dancers obtain in the dancing included improving balance by strengthening stabilizer muscles, coordination and reflexes. As a strenuous activity, it helps raise HDL (good cholesterol) and lower LDL (bad cholesterol), which is especially beneficial for diabetics in aiding in blood sugar control.

Dancing entails energy and thus burns calories away. Depending on the speed and intensity of the dance, the activity can burn 5 to 10 calories per minute. Dancing also improves endurance and cardiovascular system and increases our lung capacity. It promotes muscle flexibility because of the range of motion that entails flexing and extending muscles. It improves mental acuity or memory because dancing also involves memorizing steps, routines and dance patterns. It promotes strong bones and lubricated joints because the use of bones and muscles increase the absorption of calcium and keeps the joints lubricated to prevent arthritis. It builds muscle strength because it entails the person to carry oneself in moving along the beat.

Finally, as a social activity, dancing improves one’s sense of well being as people get to socially interact with others and make new friends. It also increases endorphin levels which in turn reduces stress and tension.
