Aspartame Bad for Diabetics?

Being a person with diabetes, you have to keep watching what you eat and drink, for you to keep the levels of your blood sugar in check. Not only that, because as part of diabetes management, you also have to maintain your weight. Now, in order to acquire both, you may look for products that are low in sugar, carbohydrates and calories. This sometimes means taking products that contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame. If you are worried about consuming aspartame, consult your doctor and find out if it can be included in your diet plan.

To lessen the sugar and calorie content, some food and beverages may contain manufactured products called artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are actually sweeter than the ordinary table sugar and can add taste with much less calories compared to what your average table sugar has. One of the most commonly known artificial sweeteners is aspartame, a combination of two amino acids called aspartic acid and phenylalanine. You might have heard a lot of controversy about this artificial sweetener, however, there have been no clinical trials that can prove that this artificial sweetener is not safe to use, or if it even contributes to severe headaches, cancer or any other types of diseases. The only reminder is that, since aspartame has phenylalanine, you should not use it if you have PKU or phenylketonuria.

There have also been suggestions and allegations that diabetics can encounter opposing health effects from using aspartame. However, there have been no clinical trials or even scientific studies that will support these allegations. It seems that using aspartame does not have specific threat to those with diabetes. In fact, and products which contains aspartame can even help people with diabetes to satiate a sweet tooth with much lesser ingestion of calories and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are the leading type of food that can cause fluctuation and drops in the levels of the blood sugar, and so, people with diabetes are strongly recommended to limit their carbohydrate intake. Since artificial sweeteners do not contain carbohydrates, they certainly have no effect in blood sugar levels. However, diabetics must still be cautious in using products that contain aspartame, because these products may contain some other ingredients that add more calories or carbohydrates. In this case, it is highly recommended to check and read the nutrition labels of the products you consume carefully before even buying them.
