In this season of love, it is natural for one’s attention to turn to ways to fuel that passion. One “controversial” topic would be the oft-thought about but taboo topic of aphrodisiacs. Do they really increase passion? And for the health-conscious, how healthy are these love potions?

An aphrodisiac is defined as “a food, drink, or drug that stimulates sexual desire or a thing that causes excitement”. The term originates from early 18th century Greek name Aphrodite, the goddess of love. And from that time on, aphrodisiacs have sprung up to create a whole new way of looking at food. Why else would asparagus be sought after for its “powerful” effect or even celery, which has been claimed to contain androsterone, a powerful male hormone that attracts the opposite sex?

Whether it originated from legend or is based on medical findings, aphrodisiacs offer more than just stimulation. A lot of these ingredients also have medicinal value, as you will find out in the following recipes. Enjoy these little appetizer versions – these will go a long way to fuel not just your passion but your health as well
