Women with Type 1 Diabetes at risk for Osteoporosis

Premenopausal women (aged 35-55) with type 1 diabetes are likely to be more prone to have osteoporosis than non-diabetic women, according to results of a study. Bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal type 1 diabetic women is found to be 3 to 8 percent lower than in women without diabetes. Aside from lower BMD, diabetic women were also found to exhibit more bone fractures, with one-third of women reported having a fracture after age 20 compared to less than a quarter of those who do not have diabetes.

Women with gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) should be screened regularly for diabetes after pregnancy, recommends a new study. Gestational diabetes increases a woman’s risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends that women with a history of gestational diabetes should be screened regularly after pregnancy.

Aspirin may prevent Diabetic Retinopathy

Initial results of new research suggest that aspirin,taken at relatively low doses, can prevent microangiopathy (a disease affecting small blood vessels).  The study found that aspirin at relatively low concentrations prevented microangiopathy in rats. However, study investigators said that before they can recommend the use of aspirin for diabetic retinopathy, they still need to know the minimal dose in which aspirin would be effective, and which processes in the retinal vessel it targets. » Continue Reading
